چکیده

A subset of schizophrenic patients has demonstrated increased language dysfunction in affectively stressful, compared to non-stressful conditions. Affective reactivity of right-ear advantage has been demonstrated in studies of dichotic listening in schizophrenia. The present study assessed whether participants who showed affective reactivity of speech were also those who showed affective reactivity of right-ear advantage. Data from 18 schizophrenic outpatients were analyzed. Affective reactivity of language was associated with affective reactivity of right-ear advantage. Findings should be regarded as preliminary due to the small sample size; however, they may potentially contribute to construct the validity of affective reactivity as a process discriminator in schizophrenia.

Stimulus-dependent effects on right ear advantage in schizophrenia

BACKGROUND When presented with different sounds in each ear (dichotic listening), healthy subjects typically show a preference for stimuli heard in the right ear, an effect termed "right ear advantage". Previous studies examining right ear advantage in schizophrenia have been inconsistent, showing either decreased or increased advantage relative to comparison subjects. Given evidence for enhanc...

Affective reactivity of speech and emotional experience in patients with schizophrenia.

Communication disturbances are exacerbated by stress in patients with schizophrenia, a phenomenon known as affective reactivity of speech. Dichotic listening in schizotypal personality disorder: evidence for gender and laterality effects.

Verbal dichotic listening performance was examined in 42 right-handed men and women with DSM-IV-defined schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) and 68 right-handed controls. As expected, both male and female control groups showed a right ear advantage on a verbal dichotic listening task. Although SPD subjects in general had lower accuracy scores than comparison subjects, only male SPD subjects s...

The dynamic nature of language lateralization: effects of lexical and prosodic factors.

In dichotic listening, a right ear advantage for linguistic tasks reflects left hemisphere specialization, and a left ear advantage for prosodic tasks reflects right hemisphere specialization. Three experiments used a response hand manipulation with a dichotic listening task to distinguish between direct access (relative specialization) and callosal relay (absolute specialization) explanations ...
